Invasive Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), Sri Lanka
Invasive alien species are plants, animals and
microorganisms which are introduced into a country -
usually for commercial purposes, and which then spread
and take over native species and ecosystems. By so
doing, they cause a great deal of harm to the
environment as well as to the economy – for example by
displacing rare and valuable indigenous fauna and flora,
choking water supplies, destroying crops, ruining
pastures, and acting as predators for commercially
important fish.

We have been working with the
United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) in Sri Lanka to design
a project to control the introduction and spread of
invasive alien species into the country, so as to
safeguard globally important biodiversity and associated
economic processes.
